MSB:

The reason they are still "miffed" over the civil war is that oral tradition (as opposed to the victor-written history books)has left them angry about the senseless destruction of their cities, burning of their crops, seed corn and homes by the vengeful Union Army, doing as they were directed to do by General Sherman, and presumably with the permission and approval of Mr. Lincoln. No conquered foreign country has ever been treated that way by the United States. The "Reconstruction" period added insult to injury and assured the hatred of the North for many generations.

Also, the Southerners do not regard that war as a rebellion, since rebels would have wanted to take over the goverment in Washington and run the whole country. The Confederacy had no such desire and simply wanted to be left alone. The slavery issue, while of some importance, was not the primary driving force behind that unfortunate war.

I must state that although I was raised in the South, my great grandfather, whose views I share, was a well known abolitionist and governer of Michigan during the war between the states.
