There are 300 million guns in this country, and prolly as much ammo as the US produced for WW2. Until a bullet-eating bacteria evolves, or is created in a lab, we'll always have to worry about crazy bad people getting their hands on them. Right now, somebody can be turned away at an airport for turning up on the no-flight list this morning, and then can go to the nearest gun show and buy pretty much anything. Let's not make it quite so EZ.
