In summary, US Airlines: there were 8 years that were profitable and 9 years that were unprofitable between 1989 and 2006.

One country, 17 years. World wide for 60 years the industry produced profits. Also apparently from 1971 to 2014 (although that data isn't complete enough to be sure).

For rail its every year unprofitable.
