Check out this link to compensation of city employees in San Jose.
data.sanjoseca.gov
Once police officer (not a commissioner or chief, or captain, or even sergeant, title is police officer) made over $102 of base pay, over $200k of OT, over $15k in "other cash compensation, almost $320k in total cash compensation plus over $16k compensation through health insurance, almost $5k for long term disability insurance, and over $90k for the employer's pension contribution. Apparently total compensation (assuming no category isn't listed) was $433,481.73.
Sure that's one person at the top but no one in the top 50 makes less than $200k cash compensation (plus a lot of non-cash on top of that). No one in the top 100 less than $190k cash, no one in the top 200 500 makes less than $150k cash (with most at that level making over $100k non-cash). Even the thousandth highest paid employee makes over $235k of total compensation and number 2000 gets something close to $200k.
I know San Jose is wealthy and has over a million people, but still...
I do have to give them credit for putting this information out there, and including non-cash compensation in it. You don't always see such transparency. Edit - Probably a legal requirement.
2nd edit - Pension contributions levels might in a sense be under-reported. I don't doubt that they are reporting what they actually contribute, but usually optimistic assumptions are made for the pension fund performance if the people with the high projected pensions are going to get what the formula calls for the city is likely to have to top off the pensions later. (But you never know San Jose could be an exception to this general trend.) |
