A rather sensible action. Lower supply for transportation in that area, little or no decrease in demand. Higher prices will make bringing in more supply profitable to the extent it can be done, and to the extent it can't will clear shortages by reducing demand or shifting it to other times. Prices responding to changes in demand and supply is a feature not a bug, and that isn't just for the airlines (and didn't you just spend a lot of time complaining about how the industry didn't make enough money?) but for the market as a whole.
