Washington Governor Jay Inslee
declared a statewide drought emergency on Friday,
saying drought conditions caused by a lack of snowpack
are the most serious in over a decade. In an announcement in the capital,

Olympia, Inslee said the drought had "deepened dramatically in the past few weeks,"

with conditions expected to worsen as the hot summer months approached.

Though rain totals were equivalent to prior years,

snowpack levels were only 24 percent of average, Inslee said.

"What we lack is snow," he said. "We are calling it a snowpack drought."
