One can believe it. Something caused the engineers hand on the throttle to make the train speed up just before it went off the rails.

Could he have been startled, nodded off, been pre-occupied .... we don't know and if the engineer doesn't tell us, we never will.

Course, if the PTC which WAS INSTALLED had been TURNED ON, the accident wouldn't have happened.
