I'm curious what more may out on this subject. From some of the articles I saw, it appears that attacks against trains are not uncommon. One of the requirements for a modern windshield appears to be that it must withstand a hit with a chunk of concrete the size of a cinder block. In this particular case, the conductor has no recollection about what happened prior to the accident. This could be related to some retrograde amnesia due to the concussion - or, who knows, maybe he suffered an injury prior to the derailment.

If true, one can only wonder why the fact that such attacks happen quite frequently remains generally unknown. Maybe because that could mean the end of Amtrack?
