I'm reluctant to speculate too much, because we really don't know what actually happened. But I did see reports suggesting that - as John says - such attacks are not so uncommon. Could be stupid kids. Maybe some kind of a game, like the "knockout game". We'll see what comes up. I think someone will dig something up.

Also, just assuming for a moment that a projectile did hit the train - and broke the windshield -- at this speed, it would feel like a real explosion. Could have knocked out the conductor.
