* Ashton Mining of Canada (ACA : TSE : $5.20 : Issued 26.0M)

Yesterday, Ashton Mining of Canada released one further sample result
from 20 kg of core from drill hole K91-1 into the K91 kimberlite
located 2.3 km NNW of the K14 pipe group.ÿ Results from two samples
totaling 97.0 kg were released Dec 2/97; the new result from 5.25 m of
core returned 23 stones per 10 kg, or 20.5 micros or 2.5 macros per 10
kg which is the best count yet.ÿ Not surprising, the release indicates
the need for further sampling of K91.

Visiting with the Company on Wednesday, we learned or observed
something of the south-to-north apparent increase in diamond
populations in the 16 pipes (an imperfect generalization), the diamond
fragment versus preserved crystalline micro distribution, diamond
recovery advantages (larger stone recovery) of Dense Media Separation
and the difficulties (time delays) encountered in working with high
concentrations of unaltered olivine.ÿ While the new detailed (250 m
line spacing) airborne magnetic surveying is indicating potentially
new target cluster areas (AEC had originally flown on 660 m spacings),
El Nino has not been a popular visitor to north central Alberta as
unfrozen ground has restricted access for ground follow-up work.
While we do expect an active exploration/drilling program in 1998,
specific plans have yet to be laid out and until this is clarified, we
might see Ashton in a holding pattern.
