Russia should of thought about that before they invaded Ukraine (involving a rather threatening build up of conventional forces at and across Russia borders) Which they did after they gave up their nukes in exchange for promises from the US and the UK to among other things
  1. Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty and the existing borders. [13]
  2. Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine.
  3. Refrain from using economic pressure on Ukraine in order to influence its politics.

In addition to invading Ukraine, Russia also started aggressively flying warplanes around NATO's borders, making mock attacks on NATO ships, and making threats of using nuclear weapons.
