I used acronis true image 2015 that came with my crucial mx 100 drives to clone the drives with some partition resizing. On the laptop I the swapped the drive to the same physical location. One my destops I may have tweaked the bios boot order. Not sure exactly how I did it.

I call that clone migrating the OS on hardware. Going from xp to win 7 was done by adding a new partition and then booting the new OS. Then configuring the new OS. My win 7 supports running xp programs so I may have reinstalled or simply added short cuts to the exe files of from xp, My upgrades in linux were mostly done by installing new version in it's own partition and then configuring with my own stuff.

Ubuntu 14.4 to 14.10 was done using the ubuntu upgrade. But that was an accident of not paying attention and it amazingly worked.
