SparQ related

I just received an email from SyQuest. They won't be coming out with a SCSI SparQ after all. Too bad. Anyway, here is the letter in its entirety:

Over the past year, SyQuest has done a great deal of careful research within the Macintosh community in order to better understand how our Mac customers are using SyQuest products and to determine what these users need from SyQuest today and in the future.

Our users tell us the Mac is the tool of choice for high performance, high capacity applications like desktop publishing, imaging and A/V. Therefore we will continue to focus our high performance products on the Mac community.

Our customers also tell us that SyQuest's SyJet 1.5 GB product has been embraced as an excellent solution within the Mac community. In the near future, they report they would like to see a next generation SyJet product which offers higher capacity, improved performance and downward compatibility with SyJet 1.5 GB cartridges. We plan to announce and ship this next generation of SyJet next year.

In addition, creative professionals working with high-end Mac applications told SyQuest what they need most is MORE CAPACITY. We answered by developing our Quest Drive just announced November 10, 1997 - a 4.7 GB removable cartridge hard drive that uses MR heads and an ultra-wide SCSI interface - which offers 3 times the capacity of any removable cartridge hard drive, extremely high performance at an excellent value of $599. SyQuest designed this precision instrument for this community of creative professionals. We will be showing the Quest 4.7GB Drive at Macworld in January (See me at the SyQuest booth South Hall 1429).

On November 3, SyQuest introduced SparQ, a 1 GB product designed to fill a low- end, mass market demand in the PC/Windows community for low-cost, fast storage that connects to any PC today with no requirement for additional hardware (like SCSI). SparQ will be available in only 2 configurations for PC, external parallel port and internal EIDE. There No plans for a SCSI version of the SparQ.

On October 30, 1997, the suggested list price of the external SCSI SyJet was lowered by $100 to $299, placing the SyJet within the reach of even more Mac users. Likewise SyJet 1.5GB single cartridges were lowered from $124.99 to $79.99 each. A 3-pack was lowered from $299 to $199.

We hope that this roadmap of our Macintosh product strategy addresses any concern you may have about the SparQ product and SyQuest's platform direction. SyQuest remains dedicated to the Macintosh community, as it always has.

The Mac community is where SyQuest grew up :-)

Sincerely,

Tay Bass

Is SparQ scheduled for a SCSI version? I have a Mac and would like to
buy a SparQ if there is a SCSI version available. Thank you.
