Before 2012 I would have given your opinion much more consideration but now not so much. The average voter doesn't really pay attention to that stuff. The average voter is going to vote for the person they believe will give them better pay, cheaper health insurance and better retirement benefits. And you can't blame them because many of them work 3 jobs a week and can't pay their rent. If you were in the same situation you'd vote the same way. I live off capital gains plus social security but MOSTLY capital gains when I can get them. MOST people don't even know what a capital gain IS...... It used to be different. A guy could get out of highschool and get a decent job and make enough to raise a family. I worked in a steel mill when I was in college. Guys can't do that anymore. In the primaries the Republicans will have to move farther and farther to the right and that will leave more and more voters in the country to DISLIKE them.
