Right, and that is the upside of deductibles -- they give patients "skin in the game" and so they'll pay more attention.

Medicare Part D had a provision called the "Donut Hole" for this purpose. It made people share their drug expenses up to a point (which was fairly low, a couple thousand dollars a year, I think) then it kicked back in and covered them on up.

The Donut Hole is credited with making patients aware of generics because people actually started pushing for generics. It was a great move that made Part D a winner from the outset, coming in massively under budget year after year.

But the ACA did away with it. The most successful government health care program in history and they killed it the first opportunity they got.

High deductibles are tough, but the truth is I had high deductibles to begin with so if I end up on Obamacare it won't matter in that sense.
