Because ISIS wasn't a problem until things went to pieces in Syria. They notched up some successes against Assad and were able to recruit and fund raise off of that. With their military-trained members, they were able to out-compete the other militias in Syria. After they got big enough, they invaded Iraq and started causing problems there.

I suppose you could argue that we should have backed Assad against ISIS. I would have loved to watch you try to make that case...
