AS Brumar pointed out, monopolies are pretty much the government forcing you to do business with someone. When competition is allowed it typically exists, at least for large important markets.

Also even a monopoly can't force you to buy from them (unless they are the mafia, or act like it, or get the government to force you). You can choose not to buy (or often to buy a substitute outside the narrowly defined monopoly).
