EPRI Research Questionnaire: will there be electrical power?

epri.com

EPRI is the Electrical Research Institute. Their home page states:

'Electricity is increasingly recognized as a key to societal progress throughout the world, driving economic prosperity and improving the quality of life. The Electric Power Research Institute delivers the science and technology to make the generation, delivery, and use of electricity affordable, efficient, and environmentally sound.

Created by U.S electric utilities in 1973, EPRI is one of America's oldest and largest research consortia, with some 700 members and an annual budget of about $500 million. Linked to a global network of technical specialists, EPRI scientists and engineers develop innovative solutions to the world's toughest energy problems while expanding opportunities for a dynamic industry.

EPRI powers progress, bringing the benefits of electricity to our world.'

Serious institute; so just read the questionnaire below. For me the sentence in the questionnaire was the most frightening sentence in a Y2K article I have ever read.

EPRI Vendor Questionnaire

Letter sent to Vendors

Vendor,

As you may be aware, EPRI is sponsoring a workshop on the issue of Year 2000 compliance in process control-based systems in Phoenix, September 9 and 10, 1997 (see attached EPRI Event Sheet). The workshop objectives are to explore the Year 2000 impact on process control, identify areas EPRI can assist the industry in addressing the issue, and ways EPRI can work with the process control industry and end-users to effect a smooth transition into the next century.

To maximize information exchange during the workshop, we are asking vendors supporting the industry to respond to some basic questions for discussion at the workshop. Attached is a copy of the questions being sent to each vendor.

Utility Year 2000 Exercise

Given this scenario:

At 00:00:03 on the morning of January 1, 2000, approximately 20-25% of the on line plants on the North American continent trip and go off line; approximately 20-30% of the protective switch gear fails to operate correctly; leading to the loss of another 20% of the on line generation.
