After moving to Salt Lake City, I studied Mormonism. It wasn't created with polygamy. Joseph Smith, a con man, created it for power and to get rich. The polygamy thing came later, in stages. He started lusting after some of the daughters of his sheeple, so, he had a 'revelation' that he was supposed to take multiple wives. After a time, his chosen close underlings wanted to take multiple wives of their own, and he had another 'revelation' that that was OK. Then, of course, all the other men in the sect wanted theirs, thus, Smith had yet another 'revelation', and it was blessed by God. Sweet deal for the Mormon men, at least the one's with the bucks to have multiple wives. Brigham Young had 56 wives.
Then, much later, when Utah was up for statehood. word was sent by the Feds that they had to give up this polygamy nonsense, or the Feds would swoop in and MAKE it happen. So, the current prophet and revelator of the time ( there is one NOW), consulted with God, and it was so. It was not yet TIME for polygamy, Joseph Smith had been premature.
But, if you reach Mormon heaven, you can have multiple wives there! If you reach the penultimate Mormon heaven, you get your own actual planet, that you rule as an actual flesh and blood God!
I don't know how it went in Islam. Being a primitive tribal society, I imagine it was already the practice before Mohammed, just as it is in our old Testament. All those old Jews had multiple wives. |
