FTP Software maps out
network strategy
By Paula Musich

FTP Software Inc. yesterday laid out its strategy to deliver a
software infrastructure that will allow companies to create virtual
IP networks by user privilege that span private and public TCP/IP
networks while maintaining security and manageability.

The strategy, defined by a new executive team led by company
President Glenn Hazard, was formulated to meet customer
requirements for creating new collaborative workgroups and to
stretch IP corporate networks to connect employees in far-flung
locations.

New pieces of the infrastructure, which FTP intends to deliver over
the next 15 months, include a directory function, proxy and
address gateway capability, a secure client, and agent-based
management and administration.

At the end of this month, FTP will deliver the VIP Internet
Gateway for NetWare, which provides user directories and user
authentication-based firewalls based on predefined user profiles,
Hazard said. Also at the end of this month, FTP will release its
OnNet 32 Version 2.0 TCP/IP 32-bit applications suite. By the
end of the year, the company will add a VIP Secure Mobile Client
to that suite for Windows 95 and Windows NT.

Java agents for client systems will deliver much of the desktop
management and administration across multiple operating
systems. The agents will use a digital signature for security.

FTP will also deliver a new type of network server that delivers
"NOS-like functionality for the IP world," said Peter Simkin, chief
technical officer for the Andover, Mass., company. The server will
deliver FTP's own directory services, management, firewall and
gateway services, and hooks into existing network management
systems.

Separately, FTP announced on Tuesday that it would take a
one-time charge of between $6 million and $9 million for its third
quarter. The charge is related to plans to sell off selected lines of
business.
