Headline: Dutch PTT Awards Glenayre $3.5 Million Contract For Nationwide Paging
Control System

======================================================================
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Technologies Inc.
(NASDAQ:GEMS) announced receipt of a $3.5 million contract to provide a
paging control system for Holland's nationwide network. Under the contract
with PTT Telecom Mobile Network Services, Glenayre will replace the network's
non-Glenayre control system with its GL-C2010 Transmitter Controller.
The contract is the first project under a new frame agreement intended to
formalize the strategic collaboration between PTT Telecom and Glenayre.
"Integrating the GL-C2010 is the first step towards PTT Telecom's goal of
realising maximum network performance for the best possible service to its
customers," said Jacques Couvas, Glenayre's group vice president and
managing director of Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "The GL-C2010 is
unique in the flexibility it provides paging carriers in choosing a cost
effective linking method that meets their specific needs."
"Under the agreement, Glenayre will adapt the PTT Telecom's networks to
state-of-the-art technology, and provide quality improvement and
standardisation necessary for the integral management of our networks,"
said Ben Bos, director of operations for PTT Telecom.
"Glenayre will help ensure that PTT Telecom meets European and
international standardisation without major capital expenditure."
Providing coverage throughout the Netherlands, the network consists of
more than 300 base stations. Glenayre will begin installation in January 1998,
and will complete the project with no interruption to commercial service.
Glenayre will also install its GL-N2000 Operations Management Center (OMC), as
well as a GL3000 Dual Active Remote Encoder (DARE), which provides hot standby
redundancy.
Though PTT Telecom's network operates on ERMES and POCSAG, the GL-C2010
also supports FLEX and ReFLEX25 high speed protocols. The GL-C2010
Controller is the latest addition to Glenayre's C2000 control products
family and is the industry's first controller to offer paging carriers
linking options such as Frame Relay and two-way VSAT satellite for one-way
paging. The GL-C2010 makes these options available through use of digital,
packet-based, two-way Internet Protocol (IP) linking, a first for one-way
paging systems.
The GL-C2010 is based on the proven technology of Glenayre's GL-C2000
Transmitter Controller. The efficiency and precision simulcasting of the
GL-C2000 have made it the preferred controller for high speed paging -- more
than 35,000 GL-C2000 controllers have been put into service by carriers in
every major paging market in the world.
Glenayre Technologies Inc. is a worldwide provider of personal
communications products and systems serving the paging, cellular,
PCS, telco, voice processing and point-to-point wireless service provider
markets. Glenayre's net sales exceeded $390 million in 1996 and the company
employs approximately 2,100 people worldwide.
