Your summation is probably pretty close to the full story. Cell phones and their related rate plans definitely are not a "one size fits all". My Consumer Cellular experience has been inexpensive and uneventful. I especially like not having a contract and being able to adjust my plan up or down on a monthly basis when I can see more or less need. I don't do that often, but the opp is there. Good luck in you search.
