Old Fyodor was an astute student of the human condition, but his motivation did not stem simply from academic purposes or from the fact that he wanted something, like political power.

Pretty much like Machiavelli, who as an astute observer of reality in 'Il Principe' summarized it all on just a few pages compared to what the great Fyodor eventually did.
