But in 2016, Republicans have the ability to nominate a formidable candidate

Like who? Certainly none of the ones so far qualify. And there is the tiny little problem of making it through the primaries and then pivoting to the general. And I don't think that Hillary is as flawed as the writer assumes. Now prior to the campaign by the Republicans to make Obama look bad in comparison to Bill, that was the case. But the burnished Bill so much, and by extension Hillary, that many of those flaws were polished out. Since it became clear she was going to run for president again, they have reversed course. But that only works with their base who are used to flip-flopping between "we were always at war with Eurasia" and "we were always at war with Eastasia" without blinking an eye or a second thought, the independents are not as willing to do that. Hillary can choose a course, looks like she is a progressive now, and steer it through the primaries and the general.

She does have some legitimate, albeit not particularly strong, claims on being a progressive. If you can get past her war hawk stance and troubling ties to Wall Street that is. However rugged that might be, all of the Republican contenders have a much more difficult needle to thread between the primaries and the general. Especially if the progressive approach resonates with the electorate like it seems to be.
