Since the difference in performance between it and Pentium MMX is something like 10-15% at the same clock speed and removing the L2 cache will remove much of that additional performance , I submit that the real reason is that the Pentium MMX will not ramp its speed above 233 mhz except in very low yield .
In order to have a low end product that will stay speed competitive
they have decided to offer a cacheless PII ,so it is reverse
engineering not redesign , as you hinted .
