Lernout & Hauspie mentioned in Fortune magazine cover article about Microsoft's Research Labs

pathfinder.com

Mr. Gates Builds His Brain Trust
Nathan Myhrvold and his CEO want to create the next great research lab. If they succeed, Microsoft will have an even tighter grip on the future of computing.

"....First of all, Gates seems to accept that investing in research is a long-term play. Second, Gates has got the just-in-case option: Just in case you can't invent it fast enough, buy it. After all, if you're Bill Gates, you can afford it. In August, Microsoft paid $45 million for a minority position in speech-recognition software company Lernout & Hauspie. Besides getting access to Lernout's technology, Gates will get a slice of this Christmas' sales after all--Lernout bought Kurzweil earlier this year."

The pdf document link in the article: "What's Hot at Microsoft's Bill Labs"
shows the "Natural-Language Processing Lab" is the largest research department at Microsoft - 58 researchers.

Research Groups involved: Natural language processing, Speech technology, User interface, Language-enabled applications.

Goals: Doing away with keyboards by creating PCs that understand speech and even talk back.
-------------

Right now I'm testing some "Microsoft Agents" -- animated characters that pop up on your computer screen and talk to you-- this is something you will have to see (hear) for yourself!

They use L&H text-to-speach engines.

-- will report back later.
