I've known people like that ... had an underlying depression from childhood on and when they got old enough they gravitated to whatever drug was most readily available. Were they self-treating? OK, one could say that, though I know they also LOVED drugs. More than anything else. Willing to sacrifice girlfriend & fiancee, & sell everything they had to buy dope .... only getting arrested would stop them. Only the threat of arrest could get them to give it up, otherwise they'd use it till they killed themselves.

Also, I don't think psychiatric treatment really works. It may help them manage the mental illness, but doesn't cure it. It's a lifelong curse imo.
