The current issue of Fortune magazine covers the great interest large companies have in partial truck automation to deal with the fuel consumption problems caused by hills and mountains. - fortune.com

The EPA goal anticipates a 9% MPG gain over the current tractor trailer trucks available for sale by 2019. A goal Peterbilt and Scania believe they'll have no problem meeting. Some truck makers who've not been focused on efficiency may have to pull it together or license technology from other truck makers.

It's just like the kerfuffle over antiquated incandescent 100 watt bulbs. Who in the world would want to buy advanced halogen 70 watt bulbs which give off the same light as 100 watt bulbs and look exactly the same?

I certainly did. They cost slightly more, and we have a couple of 100 watt bulbs that haven't burnt-out yet. But the payback in lower electricity costs are greater than the price difference in the bulb. And each bulb we've replaced, eliminated 30 watts of heat we don't need to use air conditioning to remove from our home.

As a result we're not building as many new electrical generating plants. Demand for electricity over the past 20 years has grown at a rate far slower than anticipated due to efficiency.

Admittedly, some Americans are concerned that increases in energy efficiency is threatening Saudi Arabia's well-being. But that's for them to worry about, not me.
