Black Screen of Death??

Twice this week my screen has randomly gone partially black while using Firefox (v. 38.0.5) on a Win 7 Pro system. Norton Antivirus and Malwarebytes scans are both negative. All of the search results I've found seem to deal with getting a completely black screen before log in. Nevertheless, I did try several "solutions" without success.

In my case the task bar and a white outline representing the open window and the pointer all remain visible. The rest of the desktop is black. The mouse may or may not move the pointer, but it will not initiate any of the taskbar functions, including Start. Ctrl/Alt/Delete does nothing. Restarting by holding the power button restores the system to normal operation.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions?

Thanks for any input.

John
