John Calvin (not his birth name), the gay grandson of a Hamas founder, is set to be deported from Canada on November 4. If he is deported he faces almost certain death from his family.

Calvin told reporters “Islam [and] Hamas were the two things that my family revolved around. It was not part of my family's identity. It was the identity we had.”

But by the age of 14 he had already begun to question the rigid ideology he had been raised with, investigating Christianity and coming to terms with his sexuality.

He fled to Canada in 2011, when his mother revealed a plot to carry out an ‘ honor killing' against him, allegedly over his planned conversion to Christianity.

He currently lives in Edmonton where built a new life as a Christian.

Yet a few weeks ago he found that his refugee application has been denied, on the grounds that he was a ‘contributing member’ of Hamas. He ran errands for his family when he was younger, carrying messages and so forth. He was born into a Hamas family and therefore was technically a member of the organization.

Calvin’s attorney told CNN Money”: He was just simply running errands for the senior members of his family. He certainly wasn't involved in any actual acts of terror.”

Calvin is now filing applications for asylum in Europe and America.
