I thought the purpose of gun control was to get the guns out of the hands of criminals, not to protect the law-abiding citizens from themselves.

There you go again. Our system now allows those with intent to do harm to get their hands on firearms pretty easily and legally. At worst, they have to drive to another jurisdiction. But, not all gun violence is because of someone acquiring a firearm with the intent to do harm. Often it is a person with a history of violence and possessing a firearm makes it easier for them to escalate. George Zimmerman is a perfect example.

The problem is, depending on the exact background, some people are riskier than others with a firearm. So, how to assess that risk? Why not let the people who routinely do that sort of thing anyway? They have data on all of their claims, a number of which I can guarantee involve firearms. They are in a much better position to figure out what are red flags and what aren't.

Admittedly, it isn't perfect. Much better would be to have universal registration and allow bodies like the CDC to go back and study gun violence so we can work out better solutions. But that isn't going to happen.
