Solon, You seem to be a very intelligent person and, no doubt, have given much thought to this subject matter. Those who have marveled at the heavens, especially at night, a clear night, when all the visible stars are present must have wondered 'just what is out there in space.' I have done that myself many times thinking 'how did this get started?' 'How did this earth with all of its life come to be?' Now, with powerful instruments, we know that there is much, much more that we can learn. Back in the 1920's cloudlike forms that looked like clouds of gases turned out to be galaxies and I remember learning about our Milky Way galaxy, that contain over 100 billion stars. Some said 200 - 400 billion, even a trillion. What stuck in my mind was that going 186,282 miles per second, it could take 100,000 years to cross it. It's almost impossible for the human mind to comprehend such size and distance was my thought. Since the 20's, so many more of these galaxies have been discovered that they're as common as the strand of hair on your head now. What's impressive is that these galaxies aren't scattered haphazardly in space, they're usually arranged in definite groups...galactic clusters and thousands of these have been observed, even photographed. We see this kind of orderliness to our own solar system, the sun being the nucleus around which the earth and other planets precisely orbit. Their revolutions are made with such a mathematical certainty that scientists can accurately predict here they will be at any future time.
Looking the other direction into the micro world--atoms--we find that the same precision exists. There's a nucleus containing particles--protons and neutrons surrounded by tiny orbiting electrons.
Could this orderliness just have happened? I, myself, can't believe that because the entire universe from atom to galaxies is governed by definite physical laws. There's laws that govern heat, light, sound, gravity... do not the existence of these laws say that there is a law giver? Doesn't the evidence keep insisting---intelligence? What say you? |
