I'm assuming it depends on the CD and the artist.

A used CD on Amazon? Nothing.

I just bought a Stan Ridgway CD on CD Baby because I want him to get the money. I'm assuming Stan gets most of it now. Its supposed to be on redFLY records. I can't seem to find them. Probably out of business.

Cost 8.99 instead of 6.99... download is 7.99. Why would Stan want to trade payments of .002 cents per listen on a streaming service? Taylor what's her name is going to get millions of listens. Stan, like most artists is going to get hundreds.

Streaming is nuts unless you are a huge entertainment corporation. BETTER to give away low res copies on archive dot org so people can audition them and then sell high quality copies to fans. Keep all the profits. The grateful dead proved that you can make money and still let your fans trade music. Unselfishness in their case was rewarded.

Kids who want the glory of being famous rock stars are ripe for rip off artists. The odds of making money off recordings are pretty small. Most people think a big extravaganza of dancers, lasers, etc are what makes a "good" artist. Better to go into management.

Or like Fred Eaglesmith, IMHO the greatest C&W musician out there... do your own mechanic work on your tour bus, buy and sell guitars, and do a LOT of shows.
