They're not just turning music into a commodity, they're turning it into a utility with a tap generically labelled "music".

And frankly the quality reflects the price. If someone were making great, compelling popular music these days, say like The Beatles, Stones, Doors, CSNY or Bob Dylan in their prime, I suspect they could command a very high price for their work. I'm not "hearing it", but maybe that's old person speak. Or maybe it's the egg before the chicken... the kids raised on free music have killed the market for quality. Talent seeks a more profitable outlet.
