Over 200 years ago. Its also how Russia (and in some ways just about every country) was built, but ancient history doesn't provide much of a defense here. Esp. (but not only) because Russia guaranteed Ukraine's borders as part of an agreement for Ukraine to give up nukes.

Nothing the US is doing in Ukraine even vaguely resembles conquest and assimilation.

Russia has controlled Crimea far longer than we've controlled most of what is now the US.

No. Since 2014. In the past Russia controlled Crimea. In the past Japan controlled Korea, and the UK controlled a big chunk of what's now the US and Canada, India, and many other places around the world.
