The explosion of music in the 60s was an anomaly unfortunately. Several things happened.

1) the advent of the LP. Put Tower on the map. Russ's first day in business was a few tables at his dad's drugstore piled with LPs which he sold out.

2) The hippies deciding to produce themselves. Otherwise the suits in hollywood did not care.

3) Vietnam and LSD. Caused a huge social upheaval and the underground bands like the Dead and the Airplane were right in the center of it.

The corporations quickly jumped in when they realized the money to be made on LPs rather than singles. A second punk/DIY revolution followed and was also missed at first by the corporations. They made the mistake twice and realized that it would be better if THEY produced the next "underground" phenomenas. Popular talent is organized by corporations. They control the music according to demographic studies. Alternative music used to really be alternative, it wasn't a codified genre. And that is where we are at today.

Like the middle class, musicians reaping large amounts money from recordings may be a passing thing. Corporations have almost always controlled popular taste and they've ripped real artists from the start of the recording business.

Well sometimes. PR is better.

Miles Davis is an exception not the rule. Most guys like him are ignored. Miles had a flair for self promotion.

For example, the popular complaint that Miles turned his back on the audience. Miles claimed he was just listening to his band. I don't believe that crafty devil. I think once he was criticized he realize that infamy was profitable. So he did it on purpose for a few years.

Arguably there were better surrealist painters than Dali. But that guy was a master at PR and great at business. Same with Warhol.
