Formula E is not NASCAR. It is run on a road course, making both left and right turns.. It is an open wheel formula. If they get too close together, there is a risk of having the wheels interlock and someone getting launched into the air. Drivers hate that, so they try to avoid getting too close.

NASCAR is roundy-round with an emphasis on pure speed, usually on a high bank oval. The do a lot of driving real close to each other, drafting and what not. Much more prone to crashing, bumping each other and so on. Not a fan I have to admit.
