Macy's Continues the Trump Dump

(NEWSER) – Donald Trump's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad couple of weeks just got worse: Macy's is pulling all Trump-branded merch from its stores due to derogatory remarks the mogul made about Latinos during his June 16 presidential campaign kickoff, reports CNN. Per a Macy's statement this morning: "We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico. ... In light of statements made by Donald Trump, which are inconsistent with Macy's values, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with Mr. Trump and will phase-out the Trump menswear collection, which has been sold at Macy's since 2004."
That collection includes neckties, dress shirts, and cuff links, and Trump has also appeared in Macy's commercials, notes CNN. But the chain apparently decided to sever ties literally and figuratively as public pressure over Trump's remarks heated up, including a MoveOn.org petition that scooped up more than 728,000 signatures as of this morning. In addition to posting a short list of past Trump transgressions, the petition implored Macy's to put its actions where its mouth is, stating: "Donald Trump does not reflect 'the magic of Macy's.' We urge you to sever ties with him. Macy's says it has a strong obligation to be 'socially responsible' and that 'actions speak louder than words.' Indeed. It's time to act." (Watch out, Macy's—you'll probably be sued next.) |
