Sure took a long time for that takeover:

1968 Wallace, a DEMOCRAT, took the south
1972 Nixon swept the whole country (49 states), not just the south
1976 DEMOCRAT Carter took the entire south
1980 & 1984 Reagan swept the whole country (45 & 49 states), not just the south
1988 Bush swept 41 states, not just the south
1992 & 1996 the south was split between Dems and Reps
2000 the south was finally solidly Republican in a nonsweep election year
