Maybe we do cut defense, but whatever else gets cut what really needs to be cut are the large parts of the budget that are and long have been growing faster then the rest of the budget. No attempt at taking care of the budget long term is meaningful without entitlement reform. The defense budget could go to zero and it wouldn't be enough it entitlements are not reigned in.

Moving back from the big picture to the "you name something to cut if you want more spending on infrastructure", it should be something the other party also supports cutting (or at least enough of them that a bi-partisan coalition could be formed to get the cuts through). Your not going to get the extra money you want by pretending the other side doesn't exist.

You are never going to have meaningful reform so long as the Rs continue to starve the country's revenue sources. This country had SS, Medicare, and was fighting a war in Vietnam and building an interstate system, and was still able to reduce its debt. That all change when Reagan took over and nothing has been good ever since.
