Lowe labor force participation matters quite a lot. It means even if unemployment goes down you still have fewer people producing things, it means economic growth will be more difficult going forward (unless the participation rate changes for the better), and it means you will have more people being supported by fewer people, contributing to problems both for family budgets and government budgets.

The baby boomers are retiring and dying off. However, the Millennials are starting to take their place. This faux concern over the labor participation rate is a political one; not an economic one.
