You could also try few other Linux flavors :-) Try Linux Mint XFCE: linuxmint.com It is Ubuntu based so you will feel comfortable using it. I like Mint so much better. Pick XFCE for speed & low resource uses. While there is Mint 17.2 version out, I linked you version 17.1 since there doesn't seem to be XFCE for 17.2 yet. I tried few different computers and my experience is that generally Mint works better then other Linux flavors. (Only speaking here about Ubuntu or Debian based distros) Give it a try. Also, even if your computer is 64bit, it is nothing wrong to start out with 32 bit especially if you have some kind of problems. P.s. Maybe you have problems with DVD drive? You could create live USB memory stick and boot/install Linux from it? Also always good idea to check check-sum of downloaded ISO file so you can verify that you downloaded ISO completely and it is not corrupted.
