I tried mint as you suggested but went for (Rafaela) 17.2. A bit confusing at first because it shows login info for name and password which I thought I was creating but it said wrong id and then proceeded to open in a guest page for exploring. Once here there was an icon for installing.
I set up dual boot with Vista and everything seems OK. It is fast and clean looking.
Do you use an anti virus program with Mint? I run Clam with Ubuntu on my laptop but not sure if it is really needed.
