The federal government, as part of the defense budget, often funded small amounts of money for these technologies. And that drive people like Bell Labs, TXN, and Fairchild to develop them. But everyone knew the market wasn't just the military. The motherlode was the American consumer.

If the military had not appropriated one nickel for Semiconductors, we would still have had them. It would have taken longer, but a vast number of technology products have been created without a nickel of government money.
