Nonsense, the primary market was for business computers and then the military.......toys like transistor radios and hand calculators were populated with leftover chips or chips made from obsolete processes...... I don't think there is a business in the world more capital intensive than the semiconductor industry....very few companies can now afford to go it alone and instead form partnerships with rivals..... You have any idea what semiconductor processing equipment costs and what it costs to build a mfg plant these days???/ Try a number like 5-10 billion dollars..... one piece of process equipment can easily cost 10-20 million a copy......

Intel, the worlds largest semiconductor company, makes most of its money from microprocessors for which they have about 80% of the market...... Intel doesn't make chips for toys or kitchen appliances.....until recently they weren't interested in cell phones either, but now phones use the expensive micros....
