I have installed free vmware and virtual box. I only have done on machines with intel processors where the microprocessor supports hardware virtualization.

I am still in the dabbling stage. In that I find all windows OS are unstable. They have to rebooted every few days, I want the linux machine to be the host and then set up windows as guess virtual machines.

what I still need to do is work out how you set up the guess machines to see the hosts file systems, samba files systems and nfs file systems. set up virtual machine to see shares from other window machines on the networks and shared printers or network printers.

I have found finding documentation on details to be needles in the haystack. I find I only use windows for apps that are not really time or compute intensive. My main time is spent doing most all in linux. So I don't see the win virtual machines as needing much in computer resources ever.

I may eventually build a 4 or 6 screen linux manchine where I run linux with widows virtual.
Currently I win 7 ultimate with 4 screen and 4 virtual desks but only use one and my main dual screen linux machine with 12 virtual desks and I usually am using almost all the desks.

My 12 desk pager this 5 minutes
