The reason though, is pretty simple: age. Fans who were teenagers in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the band released songs like "Dark Star," "Box of Rain" and "Truckin'" are now in their 50s and 60s. There are some of the most Republican age groups.

This is easily explained. Many of us are liberal when we're young but eventually grow up and begin to understand that idealism is over-rated. There are still a lot who don't, and a lot who become union members, or just are dependent on taxpayers for their essentials. They'll probably be Democrats for ever. The responsible adults usually become Republicans.
