I bet that's an apt description of both men assuming they ever existed in the first place.

I suppose it depends on what you mean as "existed". I am pretty sure that there were two individuals that we ascribed those names to. I am also pretty sure that both had a lot of things assigned to them that never happened. In the case of Jesus, his "story" is way too similar to that of Mithra's, for example. The early Christians put a lot of effort into papering over the differences between Jesus and the prophecised messiah for him to be a total creation. It would have been easier just to change the backstory to conform with the prophecy than trying to explain away the differences.
