That's an absurd thing to say. It's just not true. Then and now, we have shotguns, rifles, pistols. You probably think there are some especially deadly "assault rifles" out there, but those are actually just semi-automatic rifles not dissimilar from what we've long had. Mostly it's the frame and the composite military style stocks that make them "assault weapons". I guess their popularity is due to people serving in the military and getting used to a certain style of rifle. jmho
