I speculate that Joseffy gave them hard time when they confronted him and thus was banished.

Joseffy had a habit of getting confrontational with Dmitri or any SI staffer who tried to reign him in. Having seen several people over the years get banned for similar behavior, I'd say the same thing happened here.

This board is not funded by the public. The concept of free speech does not apply. The owners can remove posts and/or ban people for any reason they choose. In general, it is bad for business to do that, so they tend to be judicious about it, but they still have that right.

So Joseffy probably didn't get banned for his posts. Those just got the attention of SI. He probably got banned because he was confrontational, insisting he had rights and demanded that the same thing be done to other posters he didn't like. No doubt he claimed he was targeted because of his politics, when in reality he gets targeted because he tends to be a dick.
